Eye Priming 101

September 24, 2014

Another thing I rarely talk about on the blog is eye primers and as i've built quilt a little collection of eye primers over the past year or so, I thought i'd talk you through a few of my favourites.
Until about 6 months ago, I never really saw any reason as to why I should use eye primers, mainly because I didn't really wear much eye makeup in terms of eyeshadows all that often. Fast forward to now and I use an eye primer pretty much everyday, even if i'm just going for a liquid eyeliner as i've found using eye primers to make such a difference in the lasting powder of any eye look.

Starting off with a great budget eye primer and this is the Makeup Revolution Focus & Fix Eye Primer* (£2.50). This primer is similar to most other eye primers i've tried, with a dofut (is that how you spell it?!) applicator and a beige toned liquid. It works really well to smooth out the surface of the eyelid and just gives a nice base for your eyeshadow to cling to and stay put throughout the day.

Moving onto the more higher end eye primers and first up the Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer (£15), which is quite similar to the previous product but works a lot better in my opinion, which you would expect from a more higher end brand. I find this a little creamier than most primers i've tried, but again works great to smooth out the surface of the eyelid and giving a good base for a long lasting eye look. The Benefit Stay Don't Stray (£20.50) is one that I use if i'm travelling as this mini fits in any bag as it's so tiny. Again a great little primer and probably my favourite out of the previous two as I find my eye makeup stays in place the longest with this one.

Last but not least is a recent release and a recent addition to my little eye primer collection and this is the Makeup Revolution Aqua Seal Liquid Primer* (£3). I've never tried any other primer like this as it acts as a primer and a sealant. It a light clear liquid that mattifies almost instantly, which I love especially if i'm in a bit of a hurry. Once i've applied my eyeshadow I then apply another couple of drops onto a blending brush to basically seal my eye look in place. I have only used this a couple of times and i've found the lasting power to be quite good so far but i'm sure i'll feature this in another makeup look soon enough.

What are you favourite eye primers?

  1. I always prime my face, but forget to use a eye primer. Lovely post. The Aqua seal sounds interesting and I'd give it a go x

  3. Haha, it's spelt 'doe foot', as in the foot of a female deer. But that is an excellent suggestion.
